Published following a lecture in December 1877 - his first published work on the Decorative Arts, prior to this Morris had only published poetry. He makes his point that good design is encumbant on us all, and it's only laziness and meanness that stops us from encouraging beautiful craftsmanship. 1878 was also the year he moved into Kelmscott House.

The design for this chair was adapted from a sketch given to Webb of an earlier antique chair, it went on to become a popular item in Morris’s interiors and subsequently iconic for its period.

Jack was a prolific craftsman and designer and succeeded Philip Webb as chief designer for Morris and Co in 1890. Carving became his favoured skill and his work can be seen in Kelmscott Manor, Westminster Abbey and All Saints Church at Brockhampton. This frame was influenced by William Morris’s designs for borders of the Kelmscott Chaucer (see fig. 107 page 316, William Morris by Linda Parry V&A)
