39_ A piano designed by Gilbert O'Gilvey and the Guild of HandicraftA piano designed by Gilbert O'Gilvey and the Guild of Handicraft. Made by John Broadwood & Sons London, 1900. Oak case with linen fold panel sides, pierced stiles and double baluster legs united by a cross stretcher 4 folding doors with steel strap hinges. Interior with pollard oak veneer inlaid with ebony and mother of pearl in chequer and floral design. Gilbert O'Gilvey is known only to have designed one other piece, a wardrobe for the Guild of Handicraft. Design elements such as the front legs and floral inlaid decoration would suggest an influence of C.R. Ashbee. The piano was bought by Rev. Bertram, Cockermouth. It was also exhibited at Limars Hotel Exhibition 1905, and featured in an article on the design of pianos, Magazine of Art 1901. Height: 50"/1270mm. |
