An impressive estate desk in walnut designed
by Alfred Waterhouse (1830 - 1905) for the library at 'Blackmore'
Lord Selborne's Gothic House in Petersfield Hampshire. Maker
J.Capel. Circa 1880. Alfred Waterhouse was born in Liverpool
in 1830 and moved to Manchester in 1854 to set up his own practice.
He won his first competition in 1859 to design Manchester's
Assizes Courts. This commission rapidly built his reputation
as a Gothic designer and by 1865 Waterhouse was in London and
working on Captain Fowkes design for the Natural History Museum,
probably his finest commission.
