F68 Arts and Crafts settee by Morris & Co.
“The Century” an original Arts and Crafts settee by Morris & Co.
This is a rare settee featured in Morris & Co catalogue’s from around 1900. The name “Century” could be to mark the end of the century or it may be that it is paying homage to the designer A.H. Mackmurdo who designed this leg detail in 1880, he was thought to of been one of the most progressive designers of the Arts and Crafts period and this design was used continuously through the Arts and Crafts period.
Covered in original Strawberry Thief fabric, designed by William Morris 1883.
Strawberry Thief was Morris’s first chintz to combine indigo-discharge dyeing and block-printing with red and yellow, he closely supervised its initial production at Merton Abbey in May 1883.
This fabric probably dates from the 1920’s and bares the Morris & Co stamp to the selvedge. Although the fabric is a little faded it is still in good condition if you wanted the fabric removed and recovered in your own fabric, there would be no extra charge.
